Description: This comprehensive course will familiarize participants with the proper use of a map and compass when navigating in wilderness environments. Topics include reading topographic maps, using a compass, measuring and following bearings, creating trip plans, "improvised" navigation and more.
The course will be led by seasoned backcountry guide Dave Lottmann, a former US Marine who currently teaches rock climbing, ice climbing, backcountry skiing, land navigation and avalanche safety classes for the Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School in the White Mountains of New Hampshire while also serving on the local Mountain Rescue Service.

The workshop will commence at 8:15am and conclude at 4:30pm, beginning at the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center, located at 2779 White Mountain Highway in North Conway, NH. Click here for directions.
This eight-hour course will spend the first four hours in the classroom and the second four hours in the field.
Cost
The fee for Mount Washington Observatory members and/or registered Seek the Peak 2012 participants is $95. The fee for the general public is $115. Cost includes instruction and all associated materials (see "Gear Requirements," below).

Class size is restricted to 12 people to insure plenty of hands-on instruction and supervision by the educator, so advance reservations are strongly encouraged.
