Mothers Day in the White Mountains

This Mother’s Day don’t just take your mother “out,” take her “OUTSIDE” and make it a day (or weekend!) to remember with a visit to New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

One of the many beauties of the White Mountains Region is the abundance of attractions, hospitality and natural features you find in this network of mountain communities and rugged alpine terrain.

Whether the mountain panorama backdrop to her next “footsie” features a fresh pedicure at a mountainside spa or her hiking boots, Mother Nature sets the state for a myriad of Mother’s Day getaways.

Making it easy to plan a non-stop Mother’s Day tour are the many White Mountain Attractions that intersperse the region from Rumney and Lincoln to Bretton Woods, and Pinkham Notch to Conway including two ways to climb Mount Washington without breaking a sweat (or as ladies were known to express exertion in years gone by, “a glow.”)

The Mt. Washington Cog Railway operates on weekends prior to Memorial Day and it’s a great idea to reserve tickets in advance. For nearly 150 years this marvel of engineering has enchanted visitors as “the little engine that could” tackles world-famous adverse weather day-in/day-out on the western face of Mount Washington. To the east, the Mount Washington Auto Road offers drivers the opportunity to ascend the mountain on a self-drive basis to treeline.

While the rest of New England is well into spring by Mother’s Day, Mount Washington remains resolutely in winter mode, and unless one is prepared for fierce mid-winter conditions (AKA deep snow), hiking in the High Presidentials is best left for a summer visit to the White Mountains. Make your mother proud; focus on fun in the valleys and lower summits until after Memorial Day.

One way to put a hectic week on pause and capture some “old school quality tyme” is to hop a train. The Conway Scenic Railroad is running trains between Conway and Bartlett, with all excursions starting at the Victorian Train Station in North Conway at this time of year. You will get up close with the river valley, farms and woodlands of the Mt. Washington Valley and have the leisure to pay attention to your loved ones instead of driving.

Some of the best family memories include exploring unique settings, and three of New Hampshire’s most distinctive geological venues welcome visitors with walkways, interpretive and historical signs, and food service and picnic opportunities. The Polar Caves attraction is nestled into the Rumney hillsides just west of Interstate 93. Visitors have the option of more or less rugged routes and everyone enjoys the on-site herd of deer and fancy-plumedgame birds from around the world that make Polar Caves their home.

The Flume Gorge , at the gateway to Franconia Notch State Park, offers comfortable walking paths that follow a deep river, and features multiple waterfalls and two covered bridges. It’s ideal for leisurely strolling, stopping for photo-opportunities and learning more about the history of the White Mountains region.

For a more adventurous geological expedition, Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves , offers a self-guided tour that seems to head towards the center of the earth. Down, down, down you walk on a nicely graded walkway, and then as close to the river as possible the path leads you upstream back to the main building. Special side-trail options invite Mom (and all) to delve deep into and between the rocks, or take the high road and appreciate the setting from a purely visual perspective.

If Mom is more of a free spirit, what better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than to let her soar like a bird, or a flying squirrel, at Alpine Adventures . Pick from their menu of Treetop and Skyrider Tours to match her adrenaline level. Add a GoPro rental and you can get credit on social media for the BMDE – Best Mother’s Day Ever!!
