“Winter” and “Adventure” are two words that definitely go hand in hand in the White Mountains. While we do like to brag about the skiing and riding at our incredible ski resorts, we do have to give a shout out to these 7 awesome spots that know how to get people outside and enjoy the winter season.
Loon Mountains Resort’s Adventure Center offers plenty of incredible terrain for skiers and riders, but is also a great place for families to visit for winter fun off the slopes. Spend the day exploring the forest on their cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, coast down the mountain in a snow tube, lace up the skates and head out onto the ice skating rink, and get a dose of adrenaline as you ride the zipline over the Pemigewasset River.
The Mountain Adventure Park at Cranmore celebrates winter and wants you and your family to celebrate the season too. Their tubing park has 10 lanes, so the whole family can ride at the same time. The Mountain Coaster will have you screaming as you soar down the track at speeds up to 25pmh, the Ginat Swing will have you swinging in the treetops, and the Soaring Eagle Zip Line is a 700-foot thrill ride. Enjoy the fun under the lights, as they are open until 8pm on Saturdays and holidays.
You can find non-stop, year-round adventure at Alpine Adventures! Soar through the trees on one of their canopy zip line tours, or take an off-road adventure up to Barron Mountain and witness incredible views of Franconia Notch. Take advantage of one of their guided back-country snow-shoe tours, which includes hot cocoa! Special Twilights Tours are available on Fridays and Saturdays so you can get a unique moonlit view of the beautiful forest. (Photo: Courtesy of Alpine Adventures)
Not only is Bretton Woods New Hampshire’s Largest Ski Area, but it’s also a destination for families to spend the day enjoying their array of indoor and outdoor winter activities. Snowshoe or cross-country ski with Mount Washington as your backdrop, check out winter fat biking, take a romantic (and cozy) carriage or sleigh ride, or take flight on their winter canopy tour. Need to take the chill off? Bretton Woods Indoor Climbing Wall is a 30-foot wall with a variety of routes ranging from beginner to expert.
Include the Adventure Center in your day at Waterville Valley. There are 70km of groomed trails to take out a rented fat bike, cross country skis, or snowshoes. Lessons are also available for kids and adults. Head over to the tubing hill at the Waterville Valley Golf Course, skate around in their indoor Ice Arena, and check out their indoor climbing wall.
Enjoy winter adventures at the base of the beautiful Mount Washington. Purchase your trail pass then spend the day exploring the groomed and back-country trails for snowshoeing, fat biking, and cross country skiing, and if you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent on site. Private or group lessons are available for both kids and adults. The whole family will enjoy the snow tubing hill.
You don’t have to be a guest of the Franconia Inn to experience the winter fun at the Adventure Center. Their Cross Country ski trail system begins right out the door and there are 45km of trails to ski or snowshoe. There is also an on-site lighted skating rink and tubing hill and sleigh rides are available, courtesy of the Franconia Notch Stables .
