In case you hadn’t heard, the White Mountains is a pretty cool place in the winter. Our ski resorts are known for their epic skiing and riding, with the most incredible views to top it off. However, we also know how to have fun off the slopes, too. If you aren’t one to shred it on the trails, or just want to try something new while you’re chilling out in the White Mountains, here’s the inside scoop on the coolest activities happening on and off the mountains.
Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway
Not just for skiers, ride the Tram to the 4,080’ summit and enjoy sweeping views, a scenic walk along the Rim Trail or enjoy lunch and a beer in the Summit Café. (Open weekends, but call ahead)
Cranmore’s Mountain Adventure Park is an awesome place to enjoy a winter’s day. Take the lift to the top of the tubing hill and race your friends down their 10 tubing lanes. Hit speeds up to 25 mph on the Mountain Coaster, swing through the treetops on the Giant Swing, and zip down 700 feet on the exhilarating Soaring Eagle Zip Line.
Take in the beautiful winter landscape at Loon, with top-to-bottom mountain adventure. Offering so much more than skiing and riding, come enjoy their lift serviced tubing park, snowshoe and cross-country ski trails, ice skating rink, and ziplining over the Pemigewasset River.
From February 15-29, the Conway Scenic Railroad will be offering 90-minute, round-trip train rides from the station in North Conway to Attitash Mountain Resort. Great for skiers to access the mountain, and perfect for those looking for a scenic, winter train ride. Advanced reservations recommended.
Driven by four tracks instead of tires, the SnowCoach brings its passengers to approximately 4,200 feet up the Mount Washington Auto Road where the weather is always changing, the scenery is spectacular, and the memories are priceless.
Adventure is in their name and they know how to bring it during the winter. From Guided Snowshoe Tours to Off-Road Tours, Zipline Tours, and their always popular Thrillsville Aerial Adventure Park and BigAirBag Stuntzone, there is a bit of adrenaline for everyone.
While Bretton Woods is home to New Hampshire’s largest ski area, they also offer a wide variety of winter activities including fat biking, carriage and sleigh rides, snowshoe tours, ice skating, a kid’s snowmobile park, a slopeside climbing wall, and their year-round canopy tour with stunning views of Mount Washington.
Head over to Waterville Valley where their Adventure Center has 50km of cross-country, snowshoe, and fat bike trails along with daily rentals.
There are thousands of miles of snowmobile trails in the region and depending on where you are in the White Mountains, there are awesome companies that will help get you out onto those trails. Northeast Snowmobile in Gorham offer rentals, training, and trail maps and Sledventures in Lincoln and Northern Extremes Snowmobiling in Bartlett not only offer rentals but they also offer guided tours.
Mush! Muddy Paw offers a variety of family-friendly dog-sled excursions for those looking for a once in a lifetime experience. Meet, greet, and even feed your sled dog team before heading out on the trails.
Fly Like a Bird
A helicopter ride, soaring above the hills, valleys, and mountains of the region is an experience you won’t soon forget. Vertical Ventures Aviation in Whitefield and White Mountains Helicopter in Warren both offer incredible excursions and wonderful photo opportunities.
The annual creation of the Ice Castles is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains, and an enchanted forest walk.
Adults and kids of all ages will love to explore the miles of trails designed for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and fat biking. Bring your own gear or rent some on-site. Your trail pass also includes the tubing hill for even more fun.
