NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH - Scores of vacationers wanting to squeeze out the last bit of their summer headed to the White Mountains during a busy and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
"We've received many positive comments from our local businesses about how visitor numbers have been up this summer and spending was on the rise over the holiday weekend." Said Charyl Reardon, President of the White Mountains Attractions Association. "Travel over Labor Day weekend is most often weather dependent and thankfully the forecast, other than Monday, was for a gorgeous weekend. Certainly, a nice way to end the summer season."
Susan Logan, Marketing Manager at the Conway Scenic Railroad reported that the attraction ended summer on a high note with a successful Labor Day weekend. "We were exceedingly busy over the holiday weekend and sold out on Monday. We were up about 14% over Labor Day 2018."
Becca Deschenes, Director of Marketing at Cranmore Mountain Resort stated, "We had a strong week leading up to the holiday weekend, and overall for the summer, were up about 13% from last summer."
Restaurants like Polly's Pancake Parlor stayed busy throughout the summer and businesses like Settlers Green, Kinsman Lodge and the Conway Scenic Railroad reported seeing an increase in Canadian travelers this summer.
Christopher Bellis from the Cranmore Inn suggests that the rise in confidence in the economy has allowed consumers to feel comfortable taking vacations and spending more.
With summer quickly transitioning to fall, the White Mountains region looks forward to another strong foliage season. "We expect to have a great Fall season as long as the weather supports visitors coming to the White Mountains," stated Reardon.
When asked about the upcoming fall season, many local hotels and attractions are reporting September and October reservations are pacing 10%-20% ahead of 2018. Susan Logan of the Conway Scenic Railroad indicated that advanced reservations for the foliage season are strong and several dates in October are already sold out.
Anticipation for the Autumn season does seem to be growing, as the White Mountains was recently named the #2 Best Destination for Fall Foliage by USA Today/10Best Reader's Choice viewers. Twenty destinations across the country were nominated by travel experts from USA Today and those were narrowed down to the top 10 based on the daily votes of fans and followers.
"We're so lucky to live, work, and play in the White Mountains, where the stunning fall foliage brings visitors from around the world." Reardon, said. "We expect to see fall visitors from places such as Canada, Japan, Germany, and Australia in addition to all over the United States."
Visitors will have many ways to enjoy the mountains this fall as most of the White Mountains attractions remain open into October and some even into November. Scenic train rides at the Hobo Railroad, Conway Scenic Railroad and the Cog Railway are unique ways to view the fall foliage as are aerial lifts and ziplines, like the ones at Attitash Mountain Resort, Cannon Mountain, Loon Mountain Resort, Cranmore Mountain Resort, Wildcat Mountain, and Alpine Adventures.
