Mt. Washington, New Hampshire – The Mount Washington Cog Railway will be running weekend and holiday week rail excursions over the 2020-2021 winter season. In past years, the Railway normally closed for passenger service from December to March.
With the summit closed for the season, the Cog’s winter terminal is Waumbek Station, located in an alpine meadow on the western face of the mountain at roughly 4000’. Waumbek features comfortable warming huts, complimentary hot refreshments, snacks, and a blazing fire pit. In clear weather, panoramic views to the west and north are simply spectacular.
Motive power is provided by The Cog’s fleet of seven biodiesel locomotives, each designed and built on-site. Passenger coaches are heated, and the trip is narrated by an onboard brakeman. Online reservations are strongly recommended.
In addition to being home to one of the world’s great rail adventures, the Mount Washington Cog Railway is a convenient, full-service base station for all your winter recreation activities. This year, a groomed extension was added linking Marshfield Base Station to an existing network of hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, and easy access to back country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and winter hiking is all just steps away.
Open seven days a week, Marshfield features a food court with hot and cold snacks (including beer and wine), a convenience store, gift shop, rest rooms and the free, interactive Cog Railway Museum.
