TAMWORTH, NH, APRIL 27, 2026 — This spring, audiences are invited to witness a vivid portrait of New Hampshire’s past as Portsmouth’s Pontine Theatre returns to Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth. The Flat Iron Lot, an original stage adaptation of Alice Brown’s 1899 short story, will be presented on Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m.
Set in the fictional town of Tiverton—modeled after Brown’s hometown of Hampton Falls—the production captures a community preparing to celebrate its 250th anniversary. Through moments of conflict, collaboration, and celebration, townspeople organize parades, historical reenactments, and speeches, ultimately rediscovering a shared sense of pride and purpose. The story offers a timely reflection on civic identity and heritage as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Pontine Theatre’s co-artistic directors, Marguerite Mathews and Greg Gathers, bring the story to life with their signature blend of antique stagecraft. Props often include rolling panoramas, puppetry, and unexpected and delightful effects. It’s a dynamic modern version of a Victorian-era toy theatre.
The “flat iron lot”—a term used for a triangular parcel of land formed by intersecting roads, and in this story, a town’s public gathering place—serves as both the story’s title and a metaphor for the challenges and possibilities of shaping community.
This intimate, 45-minute performance is recommended for ages 14 and up (younger, attentive audience members are welcome). Following the show, attendees are invited to engage with the artists and explore the staging and props up close.
Tickets are $10.00, $5.00 for eligible members. Space is limited; advance registration is strongly encouraged. For tickets, call (603) 323-7591, email info@remickmuseum.org, visit the museum store, or purchase online while availability lasts.
Don’t miss this engaging theatrical event that blends history, storytelling, and artistry into a celebration of community pride and spirit.
