BRETTON WOODS, N.H. — As America approaches its 250th anniversary, travelers are increasingly searching for destinations that feel timeless and connected to the deeper story of the country itself. For 124 years, the legendary Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa has been one of those places.

This summer, the iconic White Mountains resort is inviting media, creators, historians, and road trippers alike to experience a destination where American history, world events, preservation, and outdoor adventure all come together.

Set beneath the Presidential Range, the grand hotel has welcomed generations of travelers since 1902, from celebrities and statesmen to families returning year after year. But its defining chapter came during World War II, when it became the site of the landmark 1944 Bretton Woods Conference, where delegates from 44 nations gathered to help shape the modern global financial system.

“The world was coming to Bretton Woods,” says longtime volunteer historian and docent Jim Early in a newly released feature produced by award-winning storyteller Céline McArthur.

That event, preserved within the famed Gold Room, Grand Ballroom, hallways, and even the prohibition-era speakeasy known as the Cave, remains one of the most significant moments in modern history to unfold under one roof.

“It’s fun to watch people walk in and recognize or realize that they’re walking into another time. They’re literally—in this building—entering what we call the Gilded Age of the early 20th century,” says Early.

But the Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa is not just preserving history. It is actively bringing it to life.

Every morning, volunteer historians lead complimentary immersive tours through the property, bringing guests through layered eras of American life, from the Gilded Age and Prohibition to the Great Depression, World War II, and negotiations that lead to the creation of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

“Being 124 years old, we tell a good part of the country’s history,” Early says.

As interest surges in Americana travel, meaningful road trips, and heritage tourism ahead of America’s 250th anniversary, the resort is also unveiling a refreshed guest experience following a thoughtful reimagination of the property for a new generation of travelers. The result is a rare balance of timeless grandeur, modern comforts, and the energy of the White Mountains’ outdoor culture.

Guests can experience the property and surrounding landscape through:

  • Golfing across two historic mountain courses: the Donald Ross–designed 18-hole Mount Washington Course, a par-72 classic shaped into the landscape in 1915, and the Mount Pleasant Course, a scenic nine-hole, par-35 course dating back to 1895
  • Horseback riding through winding forested trails
  • Fly fishing in cold, clear streams
  • Hiking and mountain biking across White Mountain terrain
  • Ziplining through the forest canopy on the resort’s four-season canopy tour
  • Climbing the West Wall of Mount Oscar for big, sweeping views over the Pemigewasset Wilderness and Zealand Valley
  • Unwinding with spa experiences inspired by the calm, pace, and beauty of the White Mountains
  • Riding the Skyway Gondola from the Bretton Woods Base Lodge to the summit of Mount Rosebrook, with panoramic Presidential Range views and on-mountain dining at Rosebrook Lodge.

Fourth of July at the Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa

This Independence Day, guests are invited to celebrate in the heart of the White Mountains with a full day of experiences set against the backdrop of one of America’s most historic grand resorts.

The day begins with morning yoga on the terrace, followed by the Liberty Loop Family 5K across the resort grounds with mountain views all around. From there, guests can step inside the history of the property on a guided tour of the resort or join family experiences like the Presidential photo scavenger hunt and wildlife encounters.

Midday brings the annual Stars & Stripes BBQ in the Presidential Garden, with classic cookout fare, live entertainment, and a relaxed, all-ages lawn atmosphere. The afternoon keeps the energy going with face painting, seasonal treats, and a casual social with ice cream floats for kids and festive summer cocktails and mocktails for adults.

As evening settles over the Presidential Range, guests gather for s’mores by the fire pit and live entertainment across the property, leading into a signature fireworks display lighting the sky above the White Mountains.

From sunrise to fireworks, it’s a full-day celebration rooted in tradition, and that unmistakable New England sense of summer.
