Thanksgiving is only a week away, and with it comes a round up of the top reasons we are thankful to call the White Mountains home.

Our landscape.

Did you know the White Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, which stretches a whopping 2,050 miles from Newfoundland to Alabama? The Appalachians are ancient – at one point, the peaks found here were some of the tallest in the world. Erosion and glaciation over the millennia have resulted in the gorgeous landscape you see today.

Take a tour of our rockiest wonders.

Our community.

If you consider the mountains home, you are part of a special community. While life here can certainly present its challenges (like the reliably unreliable cell service or scraping ice off your car on frigid mornings), it is a life we wouldn’t trade for anything!  Whether we’re hitting the trail right after work to catch a quick summer sunset or partaking in some good-natured grousing on the chairlift over snow conditions, we are hardy, passionate, and rooted in nature’s rhythms.

Our attractions.

There is no shortage of fun things to do in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and in large part that’s due to our amazing assemblage of attractions. We have 17 Major Attractions within our borders – can you believe it? While some are only open during the warmer months, we still have plenty to pick from this time of year (including the Mount Washington Cog Railway, Alpine Adventures, and ski resorts like Bretton Woods, Cannon Mountain, Cranmore Mountain, and Loon Mountain, just to name a few!).

Check which attractions are open.

Our main streets.

From local boutiques and renowned breweries to galleries, inns, gear shops, cafes, and candy counters, our main streets are the heart of mountain living. We pride ourselves on shopping and dining locally (and supporting our neighbors!), and we invite you to do the same this holiday season.

Shop these stores in the White Mountains, and add some dining to your day.

Our fauna.

While November is a sleepier time for spotting wildlife in the White Mountains, we are beyond grateful for the animals that call this region home. Do you remember the first time you spotted a moose on a dusky drive, or a bear romping off into the woods? Ravens playing in the wind thermals above our mountaintops, as well as bold Canada Jays and chattering red squirrels, are also favorites found in our wild spaces.

Our visitors!

When we think of things to be thankful for, YOU certainly make the list! The White Mountains and its great places to stay welcome visitors from across the country and across the world, and we are all about sharing what makes this part of New Hampshire so very special. If you’re a resident, we thank you as well for making our community a welcoming one. Why not be a tourist for the day by visiting an attraction during the off-season, or trying a new restaurant in town? You just might discover a new appreciation for the every day.
